Since 1997, technology from Mental Ray — called Mental Ray and Mental Matter — has been used by Autodesk in its 3D Max and VIZ rendering software. More recently, Mental Ray was added to Inventor.
Now Autodesk has renewed its license with Mental Image to “further integrate Mental Images’ Mental Ray rendering component technology across a broad array of Autodesk design and engineering software products.”
Translated, that means that AutoCAD’s 13-year-old Render command could finally be updated in AutoCAD 2007, due out next March 15. With VIZ already a part of the AutoCAD-based Architectural Desktop software, it was only a matter of time for the technology to democratize lower in Autodesk’s software foodchain.
Other CAD vendors also using Mental Image technology include Dassault Systemes and SolidWorks. Mental Ray software offers you complete control over light-scattering and the effects of indirect light in 3D scenes, and simulates the physical process of light propagation.
