CADalyst: Autodesk to Force Subscriptions

“I believe Autodesk will be moving to a compulsory subscription model for AutoCAD. … As it’s done in the past with other potentially troublesome moves, Autodesk is unveiling this new program in Australia,” reports Steve Johnson in CADalyst magazine.

Share Prices Slack Off

July 7th, 2006 No comments

The share price is gliding downward for some CAD software vendors. Looking at the peak-to-today price over the last year:

Intergraph is down 40% to $31 — from a 52-week high of $51.
Autodesk is down 30% to $33 — from a high of $48
PTC is down 28% to $13 — from a high of $18.
Dassault is down 11% to $53 — from a high of $60.

A second way to look at the stock-price trend is to compare today’s price with a year ago:

– Intergraph is down about $4.
– Autodesk is roughly flat.
– PTC is down about $3.
– Dassault is up about $5.

(UGS and Bentley Systems are privately-held, and do not have public share prices.)

Users Revolt Against Annual Upgrades

July 6th, 2006 No comments

I am glad to see CAD customers starting to speak out against annual upgrades forced on them by software companies.

A survey taken by CADalyst magazine shows that the majority of users prefer a timeframe of 2-4 years for upgrading CAD software. “Given an annual software release cycle, most readers told us they prefer to make an actual upgrade every three releases,” writes editor Sara Ferris.

And it’s not just the users who dislike the CAD vendor’s passion for the annual pruning of customer’s wallets. Book publisher hate the annual cycle, because it means the expense of producing new books is spread over a mere 12 months, instead of 18, 24, or longer.

Every chance I get, I tell CAD executives that users and book publishers don’t like the annual release cycle. They just smile and say something along the lines of, “You should be seeing this as a new opportunity.”

How is shifting higher costs onto customers and book publishers a new opportunity? Maybe the animosity reflected by surveys, like the one published by CADalyst, will one day penetrate the consciousness of CAD executives. “As one [user] put it, his job is to use AutoCAD, not learn it.”

(Tthat’s part of the Master Plan, too: force customers to spend more on training fees.)

Ms Ferris goes on to detail the ever-higher fees that Autodesk is charging those on annual subscription. “Many companies are paying for upgrades they’ll never implement.”

As software becomes more complex, the frequent release cycle will become increasingly more difficult to maintain, as Microsoft has find out — or the software that does ship will increasingly be of poor quality.

DWFit Anywhere – DWF viewing without a viewer install?

July 5th, 2006 No comments

Autodesk Labs have announced “Project Freewheel”:

FreewheellogoBeyond the Paper: DWF Freedom and Independence
Today is the 4th of July – the day Americans celebrate their independence. On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. Here we are 230 years later, and you don’t have to be an American to celebrate this day. Autodesk customers worldwide can celebrate the unveiling of the Project Freewheel Technology Preview….

Freewheel is a web based service to allow DWF viewing with a selection of web browsers & operating systems and no local viewer install. It operates in two modes:

  • Anyone can visit the http://dwfit.com website and enter a DWF URL, only those already shared on public websites, which will then be displayed in the viewer provided.
  • You can use the web service to display a DWF in an HTML page, like this blog, without requiring readers to download/install a viewer .

To quote the Freewheel site:

“The service works by down-loading the DWF you specify (by URL) from the source web server to an Autodesk server which renders the content and delivers the result to a user’s web browser. The Autodesk server may analyze, process, report on, and cache the DWF data provided to it. 3D, password protected, and DRM (measure-disabled and print-disabled) DWF files are not currently supported.”

This DWF, posted in April 2004 as a DWF Writer demo, is displayed below using Freewheel. It’s a very old file (created in 1983 using AutoSketch 2.1) being displayed with some very new technology

For the current restrictions/limitations or more information regarding the Freewheel visit:http://dwfit.com/

Autodesk Labs

July 3rd, 2006 No comments

AutodsklabsLaboratory \Lab”o*ra*to*ry\, n.; pl. Laboratories. [Shortened fr. elaboratory; cf. OF. elaboratoire, F. laboratoire. See Elaborate, Labor.] [Formerly written also elaboratory.] The workroom of a chemist; also, a place devoted to experiments.

Autodesk have launched Autodesk Labs, a new “semi-beta” site for customers to try new technologies, prototypes, maybe future products. I say “semi-beta” as they are offered with the usual alpha/beta cautions (don’t install on production machines, use with mission critical data or seek support via dealer/subscription channels) yet are not subject to the non-disclosure provisions that apply to the My Feedback full product betas.

The idea is you can have a play, tell Autodesk what you think, and maybe improve what could become future release products/features. There are two products ready to try:

  • AutoCAD to DGN Translator – AutoCAD DWG to Bentley MicroStation 2D V8 DGN files
  • AutoCAD Google Earth Extension – Publish 3D dwg data to Google Earth.

Autodesk Labs – http://labs.autodesk.com/ or http://www.autodesk.com/labs

Between the Lines: Autodesk Labs!
This is the new and in process public betas and R&D projects site….

progeSOFT Announces 2006 World Distribution Plan for progeCAD

July 3rd, 2006 No comments

After becoming one of most visible CAD suppliers in Italy and Europe, progeCAD is expanding their sales and support activity throughout the world

Como, IT (PRWEB) June 29, 2006 — ProgeSOFT plans include distributors in most of the major countries, and a large network of local dealers during 2006, able to provide CAD users with low-cost CAD software.

As DWG spreads as the leading CAD drawing format standard, the high price of DWG based software represents a limit for its adoption by all the various people involved in a project’s development within industry.

Individual designers, small business companies, and outsourcing suppliers have to deal with the problem of investment in CAD systems, and this sometimes encourages piracy behaviors. This opens a very good opportunity for legitimate licensing of a low cost alternative DWG CAD system, progeCAD 2006 Professional.

progeCAD has more than 50.000 users all over the world. As vendors in the CAD market push their users on an advanced 3D approach, many CAD users do not need the sophisticated 3D functions, or wish to pay the high costs associated with these types of tools. Their only requirement is real and stable DWG software to do their job and exchange drawings with others. For all these people, progeCAD is the right choice.

progeCAD is based on IntelliCAD 6 CAD engine, and is compatible with all main CAD systems thanks to DWG/DXF support, from version 2.5 to version 2006 (support for DWG 2007 is coming soon).

Besides supporting all of the IntelliCAD functionality, it has many unique features which can easily be used by designers, especially those users that use AutoCAD®.

progeCAD is also ready for customization, thanks to the free available Distribution Kit,dealers and distributors can put their name, logo, website address and buy now link on trial versions.
