progeCAD 2007 Professional used for design of High Earth Orbit Satellite

March 28th, 2007 No comments

Portland, OR, USA – March 25, 2007 – ProgeSOFT North America (www.progesoft.us), in cooperation with ProgeSOFT s.a.s., Como, Italy, has coordinated the donation of progeCAD 2007 Professional CAD software to the AMSAT Eagle high earth orbit satellite project.

The Eagle is the next generation high earth orbit satellite under construction now by AMSAT North America. The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (as AMSAT is officially known, www.amsat.org) was first formed in the District of Columbia in 1969 as an educational organization. Its goal was to foster Amateur Radio’s participation in space research and communication. For over 38 years AMSAT groups in North America and elsewhere have played a key role in significantly advancing the state of the art in space science, space education, and space technology.

The new Eagle satellite (http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/satellites/satInfo.php?satID=75&retURL=satellites/futures.php), scheduled for launch in March, 2009, will provide many services and reliable communications to HAM radio operators on bands previously not available, and will build upon technology developed previously by AMSAT North America.

progeCAD 2007 Professional, the latest IntelliCAD software from progeSOFT, is being used to document and design the mechanical aspects of the Eagle Satellite. progeCAD 2007 Professional includes a library manager for discipline specific symbols, ACIS solid modeling, raster image support, rendering, and a unique set of tools that only ProgeSOFT offers. progeCAD software supports the DWG design file format, from version 2.5 through 2007, plus support for AutoCAD® menus, scripts, blocks, and AutoLISP®.

“We are proud to be selected by the AMSAT Eagle satellite project as their CAD system, and we are looking forward to the launch of the satellite in 2009.” said Scott Hucke, President, ProgeSOFT North America.

Adobe vs Autodesk:
UBS Wonders

March 22nd, 2007 No comments

During Adobe’s conference call, John Stewart of UBS asks the same question I had last week:

Q: And then one other follow-up question with the Photoshop Extended. Looking out into the future of this product, how deeply will they start to compete with Autodesk products?

A:

…what we are finding increasingly is that imaging is used in all these vertical industries to do a very extensive usage. And so, while we are supporting 3D models, the reality is that Photoshop will just continue to be used to create an image of it — as opposed to doing the modeling.

So, I don’t really see Photoshop Extended as being competitive to what Autodesk is doing in the CAD marketplace at all. What I do see is that it allows people in those industries to do more interesting things by importing CAD objects and converting it into raster images.

Adobe’s answer sidesteps recognition of Autodesk’s non-CAD products that work with 3D models.

No Short Term Benefit from Vista
-Autodesk

March 8th, 2007 No comments

When asked if Autodesk can “expect any positive benefit from Vista, given the lack of compatibility of the older products going into fiscal 08?,” ceo Carl Bass replied (during last week’s conference call):

I wouldn’t look for any short-term benefit from Vista. As much as I am understanding is, I think people will upgrade to Vista at almost the rate at which new PCs are sold. There doesn’t seem to be a big movement amongst our customer base to run out, and certainly get early versions of Vista. I think over time as Vista becomes the dominant operating system, you will see people moving off older versions.

Software Pirate
Plagiarizes Blog Content

March 7th, 2007 No comments

Software pirate rips off blogger — and then tells the blogger! So-King wears no pants (has no shame).

I wrote about AutoCAD 2008 here: All the Details.

So-King leaves a comment in my comment section: “soft Autodesk AutoCAD 2008 http://www.so-king.com/soft/index.as” with a link back to his China-based Web site (run by the infamous 163data.cn spammer organization).

His Web site tries to look like a software sales-review site. AutoCAD 2008 costs $130 for “members.” There’s a screen grab of AutoCAD 2008 with So-King’s registration information. And commentary of the software — lifted from my Weblog.

As I say, So-King wears no pants.

(I’ve asked him to remove my copywritten content; I’ll leave it to Sandy Boulton to deal with the software being sold.)
